Soviet KGB Lieutenant Colonel
M1969 parade uniform

Strict, late 1980s daily uniform of a Lieutenant Colonel of the KGB, the infamous Soviet committee for state security.

The KGB, short for Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti, the Committee for State Security, was the main security agency for the Soviet Union from 1954 until 1991. As a direct successor of such preceding agencies as Cheka, NKGB, NKVD and MGB, a committee was attached to the Council of Ministers. It was the chief government agency of "union-republican jurisdiction", acting as internal security, intelligence and secret police. Similar agencies were constituted in each of the republics of the Soviet Union aside from Russia, and consisted of many ministries, state committees and state commissions.

This uniform dates to the mid 1980s with the ribbon bar placing it in the late cold war era. Altough worn, it is in very good condition. The tunic and trousers are olive green standard officers issue with cornflower blue piping and details on shoulder boards and along the length of the trouseres. The visor cap is a private purchase, late Soviet era cap with the same cornflower blue base and piping. The collar tabs hold the standard armed forces insignia on dark blue backing. The shoulder boards feature two large golden stars each for the rank of lieutenant colonel.

While post-war with limited combat experience, this lieutenant-colonel still holds an impressive array of awards in the ribbon bar relating primarily to the nature of the KGB as both the Order for Friendship of Nations and Medal for Combat Cooperation is present, yet so is the medal for battle service. Other awards include long service and anniversary decorations, notably also the Order for Service to the Socialist Motherland, III class. On the wearers right are two badges - the combined arms profiency badge III class and the 1987 KGB 70th anniversary badge, which in this case is a copy.

The tunic and trousers are size 48 (US38) and the visor cap is a size 58.
