1980s daily service uniform for a Polkovnik (colonel) of the KGB, the Soviet committee for state security.
The KGB, short for Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti, the Committee for State Security, was the main security agency for the Soviet Union from 1954 until 1991. As a direct successor of such preceding agencies as Cheka, NKGB, NKVD and MGB, the committee was attached to the Council of Ministers. It was the chief government agency of "union-republican jurisdiction", acting as internal security, intelligence and secret police. Similar agencies were constituted in each of the republics of the Soviet Union aside from Russia, and consisted of many ministries, state committees and state commissions.
This uniform dates to the mid 1980s with the ribbon bar placing it in the late cold war era. Altough worn, it is in very good condition. The tunic and breeches are olive green officer issue with cornflower blue piping and details on shoulder boards and along the length of the trouseres. The visor cap appears to be a 1980s private purchase, late Soviet era cap with the correct cornflower blue base and piping, gold cord and finally fitted with a delicate 1960s brass and enamel cap cocarde. The collar tabs hold the wreathed star armed forces insignia on cornflower felt backing. The shoulder boards feature three large golden stars each for the rank of colonel.
This colonel still an impressive array of awards in the ribbon bar relating primarily to the nature of the KGB as both the Order for Service to Socialist Motherland III class and the Medal for Combat duty. Other awards include long service and anniversary decorations ranging from the 1965 jubilee award for the victory over Germany, the medal for 100th anniversary of the birth of Lenin in 1970, the medal for Veteran serviceman and all three classes of the irreproachable service medals. On the wearers right is an academy graduation badge.
The tunic and trousers are size 50 (US40) and the visor cap is roughly a size 58.
